1,1,2,2-Tetrachloroethane, an aliphatic chlorinated
hydrocarbon, is a clear, non-flammable liquid with a chloroform-like
odor. It is a manufactured chemical that does not occur naturally. It is
a highly volatile liquid but non-flammable liquid at room temperature. It
reacts violently with alkali metals and strong bases.
1,1,2,2-Tetrachloroethane is used principally as a feedstock in the
production of other chlorinated hydrocarbons such as di, tri- and
tetrachloroethylenes. The other uses are as a solvent, paint/rust
remover, metal cleaner or degreasing agent and fat extractant. It may
also used in soil sterilization and as an ingredient herbicides;
